I softened them up with a quick wash in cold water and then hung them up to dry. After that they were still rugged and not quite as stiff. Great arm protection against thorns like blackberry and rose stems. Also very good for pruning sharp tipped leaved bushes and trees like Hollies.

Finally! Can cut down Multiflora Rosa without my arms looking like I was on the losing end of a fight with a bobcat. Only negative: they seem rather long for average Women's arm length but opening is rather snug for average male bicep.
